Nerdy Sound Fix

Here's where I get nerdy:
To the rest of the group - I fixed the audio!!! :) I was able to EXPORT the
"sue" track that we recorded earlier and I saved it as a file from Garage
Band. Unfortunately, it saved as an m4a file which is for use in iTunes. I
brought the file over to my PC and opened it in Audacity and it wouldn't
register b/c it was m4a. So what I did was I imported it into iTunes and
then burned it to a CD. You might be asking why...well, when I burned it to
a CD it made it a file that I could then RE-import to the computer through a
program I have called Audiograbber. Audiograbber brings files in as WAV or
MP3 format which is what we needed. I was then able to open the mp3 file in
Audacity to mess with it.

I did a "normalize" to even the sound out and an "amplify" to boost it a
little. I then exported the edited sound back out as an mp3, put it on the
flash and took it back over to the Mac. I imported the track back into
GarageBand.
Crystal Clear and perfect and loud enough! :)

Day Four

Tired... that pretty much says it all. But, it's a good tired. I have learned a lot this week. I really enjoyed the smartboard presentation today. That piece of technology is so cool. The possibilities are endless. There is this incredible number grid activity that was demonstrated that allows you to show multiples of a given number. In its interactive form, it is beyond cool. It makes me want one even more. I can tell that my principal is going to get the "smart" talk over and over again.

The movie chronicalling our groups journey turned out great. Juli did a great job with the editing. It feels good to have all of our projects done.

Well, gang, this afternoon is the big moment of presentation. It's going to be a lot of fun to showcase what we've done.

Sheryl

My job today is to hand in all our work in the right format. I think we have it all nailed down--video documentary is burned to dvd, the standards, podcast, jpgs and paragraph are all burned to cd. So, Team Butterfly, we are good to go for today's sharing session. Juli and I listened to the audacity session and it is very useable for school this year. Podcasting!! Look out West Allis!!!
Next I want to work on setting up my computer for Skyping.....

Day 3

Sharon

It was another productive day. We viewed the podcast Chad edited last night. It was great. We had to add a couple of details today and Chad was able to easily do this. I went to the creating a podcast in garage band and collecting and organizing your podcasts with iTunes sessions today. I now feel I will be able to use both these resources with some success. Working with the group has been enjoyable again today. My brain is full and tired!

Sheryl
Hurray! The script is finally done! It looks and sounds great. Chad and I worked on the podcast this morning. He was able to transfer my garageband file onto his laptop and merge it together with his.

Chad did an awesome job with the enhancing. The pictures are so cool. We went to the enhanced podcast session and learned some cool things. The feature of adding pictures and chapters is really great. I get more excited everyday about incorporating what I have learned this week into my classroom.

Juli

I GOT OUT OF WORKING TONIGHT!!! ^_~ All you have to do i guess is look like "some one threw up all over your face". Ha ha, that's priceless. I'm still dead tired. Today was good. Worked on a lot of the music editing...etc. I'm really sad to see Chad go today U_U I kind of liked that guy.... (just kidding! he was totally awesome!!! n_n) Other than that the really only cool thing that happened today was MC FRONTALOT totally got in touch with me so now i can use his music to my hearts content - - - - - LEGALLY!!! (See Dick... i'm getting there [or not at all... depends on how you look at it]) I'm dead tired so i'm going to get working on this video before it turns out horrible and everyone hates me.

it's so hard to be juli lisser

::plays the world's sadest song..... ::

-JULI!!!

Deb-
Kudos to Chad and Sheryl for getting the podcast put together! Awesome job!
I will burn the podcast, standards and one paragraph description to a cd for tomorrow. When Julie brings in the award winning video documentary we will burn a dvd of it. I went to the session on being a consumer of podcasts today. I know the basics about using iTunes for aggregating podcasts but I have much to learn about the finer points. We share our Team Butterfly work with everyone tomorrow--Yeah!

I really enjoyed working with you all this week. It was a pleasure to get
to know you each and to work with you. I felt like we really all brought
different strengths to the team and we divided up chores evenly and
communicated very well! My only regret was not taking the time to learn
from or teach each other a little more. I'm sure there is some video stuff
I could have picked up from Deb/Juli and I would have liked to teach you a
little more about the podcast and how I did some of the things I did or pass
it off a little so everyone could get some play time. :(

In the end, I think we did a really great job and I'm sad I can't be there
today. Good luck with our presentation and let me know how it goes.
Hopefully Juli will get it on YouTube later so I can see it. Oh ... And if
you all want to see something REALLY funny on YouTube, check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQoldivAxvQ You may recognize the dork on
the far right. :)

Again - it was a great week and kudos to you all! Take care and keep in
touch! www.kafkaproductions.com

Day two

After some anxious moments over the script, Day Two ended on a good note as we finalized our podcast plan.

Chad -
Today was finalizing the script. Twice. I learned a few tips in the iPhoto class that were helpful, but for the most part, I knew most of what she was teaching. I'm excited for the iMovie panel later today. We also interviewed our curator and I'm a little worried about the sound being too low, but I have a few ideas how to fix it. I think our group is working really well...we work though problems together and are able to compromise and come to a conclusion together. :)
Great job everyone! I'm sad I only have 1 day left.

Sheryl
Today was script day. We spent quite a bit of time scripting. It's great to have that part done so that we can get on with the fun stuff.
I enjoyed the iphoto session. While I had some experience with iphoto, I picked up a few new tricks that will be very helpful.

Sheryl

Deb-
Isn't script writing difficult? I am glad that we have hammered out the plan. It was great getting some good quotes from Susan for putting together the podcast tomorrow. Chad has already set up the intro music and opening statement. Sheryl will voice the Little Skipper (our own Powesheik!) Could Pixar be waiting with a contract for her?! And Juli will be looking for an academy award in the short documentary category (and this time i'm going to win! - sorry for the intrusion! ;) ) --she was out interviewing museum visitors today. I look forward to seeing a great summary of Team Butterfly's work.
Back to script writing, I think this will be the most difficult part to teach students to do. They will be anxious to get going with the "fun" part but we will have to require a finished script before we let them loose on the "fun" part. The motivational carrot! (Hey, Juli, is that too teacher-ish?)

Sheryl
I attended the copyright session this afternoon. Copyright sure is complicated. There is so much that one can do with technology, but we have to be very vigilant about abiding by copyright law. I have a lot of questions still. I am definitely going to check out the websites that were recommended in the session.
I spent some time this evening searching around for royaltyfree, copyright permission granted music/sound files. It's hard to find.

I played around with garageband this evening as well. I did a "practice" run through my part of the script. It really is easy to use garageband. I'm interested in finding out if it is easy to transport garageband files between computers.
I'm sure tomorrow will be a busy day for all of us as we work on completing and edition the podcast. I'm looking forward to more learning tomorrow.

I was really excited tonight because I created a podcast from scratch to use in my classroom. I have skip counting songs that I teach the kids. Most are just little jingles that I made up. I sang the songs, recorded them and even figured out how to upload them using iweb. It's pretty cool stuff. I am really excited about using podcasting in my classroom this year.

Our team is really working great together. I think we are all learning a lot from each other, which is really great. I'm looking forward to seeing what our finished products look like.

Sheryl

Juli

WELCOME TO DAY TWO... er right, sorry about the enthusiasim! I just got off of work at Joann Fabrics and tonight i recieved a service award pin for excellent customer service! ::pat on the back:: Any ways, today was really crazy! We turned in our script and our specialist wasn't too keen on it, saying that it might have been too young. I thought it was a great idea, since the exhibit it's self is VERY child orientated - i mean look at me in that cocoon... i barely fit! O___o But we re-tooled the script a little, and the curator LOVED it, so then we went on to recording. Lunch was not too thrilling today. I would have been fine with the nachos and all if the lady in front of me in line hadn't mentioned that the food was provided by Sodexho... nothing against Sodexho, but they are the people who provide my school lunches (now you get it right !!^_~) . I think that by far the coolest/most frustrating thing of the day was the copyright keynote. I actually got physically sick during the presentation... and that hasn't happened since 9th grade American 20th Century History! I was just really shocked with the creative restrictions that are on media. As the camera man/host/editor/creative designer of a TV show I was shocked at how many things i'm going to have to change in order to stay legal. This also lends a little bit of stress to as Mrs. T put it, my block buster documentary. I was really hoping to just use what i usually use for music, and extra visual aids, but now i can't. I'm actually probably going to record my self in audacity tomorrow, and layer my saxophone pieces into the movie for music, since I play strictly classical saxophone. Other than that, life is good at this conference, my group is great! I'm really bummed that tomorrow is going to be our last day with Chad though. It's a shame he won't be there for the unveiling of my master piece of a movie !! ^____^ Speaking of which.... i better get my editing on!

Sharon

We spent a lot of time working with the script today. It was a lot of work like they said it would be. We received some information from Susan when we interviewed her again. Chad and Sheryl are putting the final script together. It is sounding good guys:) I went to both the iPhoto and iMovie session today. I know very little to nothing about both this programs. Needless to say, I learned A LOT today! I spent time tonight practicing and working with both these programs. I looked up the standards that will match our podcast. I'm looking forward to seeing the final products. It has been fun learning these past 2 days with such a knowlegable friendly group!

How about?????

What do you guys think of doing our podcast from the perspective of an endangered butterfly? Since we are looking at targeting a younger audience, we could have the script written as if a butterfly is talking. He/she could talk about what it's like to be endangered and what can be done to try to save the butterflies like himself. It would be something different, creative and fun. Just a thought. What do you think?

Sheryl

I personally think that is a great idea, and a good tie in into the other side of the wing. I don't know how much exposure you have to the whole butterfly wing - but the film that was playing on the other side of the wing is actually the developement of a butterfly from her perspective! I think that any use of a fictional character with kids is a great idea, it gives them a great emotional and educational bond to the ideas we are trying to convey (in a short amount of time). Great Thinking!

Juli^(*.*)^

I'm good with the idea...I just think we need to run it by the curator and make sure that's what she wants for the exhibit. I think kids are definitely the target audience so I think that would be a great idea.

INFORMATION ON OUR BLOG!

Welcome to the offical "Team Butterfly" Blogger site. We are the team at the MDMC that will be covering the endangered butterfly portion of the butterfly wing at the Milwaukee Public Museum. As one of the administrators for this blog, I just wanted to lay down the ground rules for the blog.

1) Each Day Has It's Own Post: Please only post in the day's corresponding post. Everyone can post in on... just leave some space! ^.^

2) Please Do Not Start New Thread Posts: Please try to stick to the singular daily post, if you want to post about a certain class that you took try to cover it in your daily. (the only exception to this is if you want to post about the script... then feel free to start a new thread post for any of the ASPECTS of the projects!)

3) Please Have FUN! : The reason that blogs are kind of the "IT" thing of the begining of this century is that it allows you, to be well, YOU! Post pictures, share emotions, post videos....etc! This is a site for us. We are lucky enough to have this experience, let's enjoy it!

I guess that's it! If you have any questions at all, remember, you can always reach me at stargatefan27@gmail.com!

HAVE A GREAT EVENING! <(^.^)>/*

Day One

Chad
Well, technically this is DAY TWO but I couldn't figure out how to login to the Blog b/c the text message with the info (on my end) didn't show the underscore in the middle of the username. Good times. I enjoyed the first day. At first, I felt like it was starting to drag b/c we didn't do any HANDS ON stuff until around 2:30. Although, looking back, I feel that it was planned out very well to give us our PLANNING day to get all our podcast information together. I fully enjoyed the GARAGE BAND workshop. I haven't had time to mess with it before this conference and it is very easy to learn. I can't wait to use it for our podcast and I can't wait to use it in a future class I'm developing for the middle school I work at. As Juli mentioned - I too was shocked that the podcast would ONLY be 2-4 minutes. I have a TV background so I'm familiar with condensing things down to sound bytes but I figured it would be longer. I enjoy listening to hour long podcasts myself (Jay and Jack's LOST podcast -- www.jayandjack.com, Kevin Smith's Smodcast, etc).
Enjoyed my first day, bring on DAY TWO! :)

Sharon
We started today with an overview of what a podcast is and how to create one. The different instructors shared their information of the components of a museum podcast, an introduction to digital media terms, review of the syllabus and conference logistics and what 21st Century Skills are necessary to create a blog, podcast, and movie. Our group spent time with Susan, learning about endangered butterflies. Juli and I worked together to create our team blog. This is a new use of technology I have never used before. It was easier to set up and use than I thought it was going to be. Thanks for the mini-lesson today Juli.

Deb
Today was great! Everyone worked well together and divided up all the tasks. What a good group we have! Our museum consultant gave us a good explanation of the endangered butterflies of Wisconsin. You could easily hear the passion she has for trying to save these animals. Tomorrow the script gets written! Juli did a great job of filming our group's beginning. We will have a record of our group process starting with looking at our exhibit and exclaiming, "Is that all there is to it?" After hearing the consultant we know it will be a challenge to condense this to 2-4 minutes. The garageband session had good handouts for us.

Sheryl
Wow! What a day! I think I am going to love podcasting. Today was my first real exposure to podcasting. I came away from the podcasting session feeling pretty confidant that this is something that I can do. I can see many uses for it in my class of first graders. I love how easy garageband is to set up and use. There is still so much that you can do with a podcast. Most of my questions now are about copyright issues. The copyright session is going to be a must for me.
Chad, I know you have quite a bit of experience with podcasts. Did you feel that the session was beneficial for you, with your previous experience?
I'm a little apprehensive about the script. It seems a monumental task to condense so much information into just 4 minutes AND have it be something that is appropriate and interesting for elementary children.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Once we get past the giant hurdle of the script I think the real fun part will start.

Sheryl

Juli ^.^
As you probably have read by now, today was the first day of the MDMC 2007 conference, and it was a BLAST! Today we got to meet our group members, and check out our exhibits, which we would be doing a "brief" 2-4 minute pocast. I'm not going to lie, i was completely shocked when i found out that I would be part of a group working on a podcast that short! I love listening to podcasts, i think that they are one of the greatest contributions to our social fabric. I love listening to GeeksOn (check them out at http://www.geekson.com/ ) and of course the infamous Ask A Ninja. The GeeksOn podcasts are usually an hour and a half to two hours - i have never thought of a podcast that could be under five minutes. I'm sure though that our script writers are really going to create an really catchy piece - - i mean they have to right, with that limited amount of time! As you probably know, by now, I'm not super involved with the actual podcast, I've taken on the role of the movie director, and really catching what our group is about, and how we aren't just educators, or students, but we are actually active problem solvers in our digital communities. I'm really excited to see how this is going to turn out! Other than just getting organized, Sharon and I spent the afternoon on this site setting it up, and i also went over the mac interface with her. It was a lot of fun! >.
